Positions

Get in position!

What are the positions?

All players on the GameDay squad platform for Aussie Rules are allocated 1 of 4 positions every season. These positions are:

  • Defenders - (DEF)

  • Midfielders - (MID)

  • Rucks - (RUK)

  • Forwards - (FWD)

How positions are determined

Player positions are reviewed annually by the GameDay Squad team from data provided by StatsPerform (https://www.statsperform.com) through Champion Data, the official stats provider of the AFL to make decision on player positions for the upcoming season.

If our stats provider lists a player as dual position, GameDay Squad not having dual positions will have the final say in what position a player will be for the upcoming season.

How can I check what position a player is?

Coaches can see players position from the Icon on the player cards as well as flipping over to the back of the player card.

What happens if a player is listed by the stats provider as dual position?

Because no sport on the platform has Dual position, in the event a player is listed as a dual position player, the following process will occur:

  • If a player is listed as MID/Anything else, the player will always be the "anything else". For example in 2026 Christian Petracca is listed as a MID/FWD by stats. He therefore will be a FWD in 2026

  • If a player is listed as RUK/Anything else, the player will always be the "anything else". For example in 2026 Sam Draper is listed as a RUK/FWD by stats. He therefore will be a FWD in 2026.

  • For other dual positions such as DEF/FWD, GameDay will determine the position most appropriate to the player and for the platform that season.

Do positions change through out the season?

No, player positions will never change after a season launch and stay the same for the entire season, even if that player’s actual position in real life changes during the year. The change to the players GDS position would occur in the following offseason.
